Project: Darfield Dryer Facility

Client: Fonterra

Structural Analysis: COMPUSOFT ENGINEERING

Structural Design: Silvester/Clark

Analysis Software: ETABS Nonlinear

COMPUSOFT ENGINEERING were engaged to undertake a seismic analysis of this large reinforced concrete structure using the finite element analysis package ETABS. Significant cost savings were achieved by use of non-linear pushover and time history analyses to verify that satisfactory rocking performance could be achieved by allowing foundation uplift, thus avoiding the need to install pile foundations. Structural irregularities in both mass distribution and stiffness added considerable complexity to the analysis.

This project was the subject of a well received paper presented at the 2012 NZSEE Conference:

Brooke, N J, Davidson, B J, Blain, S, and Clark, P (2012) Efficiency by Analysis: The Fonterra Dryer Plant, Darfield. in Proc. NZSEE Conference. Christchurch, New Zealand.
